The College of Charleston’s board of trustees voted Monday to increase tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year by 3.5%, according to a news release.

Full-time students, those who take 12 or more credit hours, pay a flat fee for tuition, while part-timers pay by the credit hour.

For full-time students, undergraduates who are South Carolina residents will pay $5,693 per semester, while out-of-state undergrads will pay $14,772 per semester. In-state students in a graduate program will pay $6,262 per semester, while those out-of-state will pay $16,249 per semester.

For part-time students, the per-credit fee will be $474 for in-state, undergraduate students and $1,231 for out-of-state undergraduates. In-state graduate students will pay $522 per credit hour, while out-of-state graduates will pay $1,354 per hour.

“We recognize that any increase in the cost of attending the College of Charleston is a matter of tremendous importance to our students and their families,” board chairman Greg Padgett said in the release. “The board has carefully considered these tuition adjustments in the context of our current budget and our university strategic plan, and we believe that they are necessary in order to maintain the high quality and prestige of our academic programs and student services.”

College spokesman Mike Robertson said the 3.5% tuition hike does not apply to the School of Professional Studies since it operates on its own tuition-fee plan.

In late April, the board voted to reduce tuition for students in the School of Professional Studies, which targets working adults who want to pursue a bachelor’s degree, by nearly 20%. Students in that school will pay $375 per credit hour beginning in the fall.
